Haven't posted in ages...been back in Melbourne since 30th Jan, had a week to get my apartment and everything else in order and to spend some quality time with someone special to me. Been back at the hospital for the last 4 days...very stressful and busy and hectic and lots of info-overload from crazy consultants and registrars who know freakishly large amounts of minutiae...dunno if i need or want to ever know so much about such a narrow field. Reminds me of what my research supervisor once told a group of us students, "Any specialist, in the true sense of the word, is an idiot." What he meant was that anybody who knows lots about a particular area, but only about that area, is stupid...because it is important to be knowledgable about a wide breadth of things...after all, there is a big wonderous world outside of the hospital, thought it is hard to realise sometimes. Anyway, i'll be happy if i'm a competent doctor who doesn't kill my patients...they often sick enough on their own, don't need me to force them to walk down the dark tunnel towards the light...

hahah well i only said i wanna be a gatroenterologist because it seemed like the only easy specialty i've come across so far...but i would like to specialise...but not to be a 'specialist' as i defined it before
but even if specialists are stupid, at least they get paid well...heheh...that is something i could do with
thanks for ya encouragement...i need all of it :)
If you think specialists are stupid, then I've got two words for you- G P
A gastroeglist (i have no idea) is a what exactly? (see, told you i have no idea) It sounds... unpleasant :P
Look, I think Vi is right, you worry too much (Gee! I can talk!!) But you're a smart boy and you are gonna be a great doctor. If it makes you feel better, I already plan to put my life in your hands in the future, when i have to pay for the abuse of my body in my youth =)
Well the thing about GPs is, they are the opposite of specialists in the sense that they know a small amount about a very large area...since a peson can walk into a GP's office with virtually any problem and the GP has to (try to) deal with it.
A gastroenterologist deals with diseases in the gastrointestinal tract, which is anywhere from mouth the anus...but usu stuff like stomach and intestinal.
Well i'm flattered you'd trust me but I'm sure you can do better ;) seriously though, our faculty tells us (and i agree with them) that it isn't a good idea to be treating our family and close friends (especially on a long-term basis), since it is better for the patient to have an objective, un-biased doctor who doesn't know any of your other acquaintances, if only for a trust reason. For example, if you had some embarassing problem that you wanted to keep secret, and even though i'm bound to confidentiality, at the back of your mind you might be thinking "what if he told his mum and she told my mum etc etc"...which might delay or stop you from seeking help. Anyway i've crapped on enough, just one more reason why it not a good idea, for me anyway...the thought of having to do a physical exam on my cousin...hmm...rather not thank you very much *shudders* ;)
